Community Updates

To keep communities informed about the environment and Diavik, EMAB organizes annual public meetings in the communities, where possible. We usually give an hour-long presentation, followed by a question and answer period and discussion. It's also usual for us to host a feast immediately after the public meeting.

Community Engagement

After a board effectiveness workshop held in November 2003, EMAB decided to develop a five-year strategic plan, which would help us be more effective, efficient and accountable. We also decided that members would consult with their communities. The information gathered would help us determine what parts of our extensive mandate needs the most attention.

EMAB visited four of the eight communities in the fall of 2004. We explained our multiple roles as a watchdog of Diavik and the regulators and our responsibilities to the communities. Most importantly, we listened to what the people had to say about their community priorities.

Because of all the development taking place in the Northwest Territories, Aboriginal governments and groups are very busy. We are currently working with the North Slave Metis Alliance and the Tlicho Government to come up with a way to gather the information we need to move forward with our strategic plan.
